MOGADISHU – Somali Islamist group Al Shabaab has released new photos of Saturday’s attack on military base near Kismayo.

The photos showed that the group’s fighters stormed inside the base, looting the military equipment.

Bodies of several dead Jubaland soldiers were seen lying on the ground.

The al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab claimed to have killed 41 soldiers after suicide and gun attack on military base in Sanguni area, some 50km north of Kismayo.

Meanwhile, Somali military has vehemently denied the claims, saying its forces had repulsed the attack, killing 73 Al Shabaab militants.

The military also claimed to have seized a car laden with explosives.

In another statement by US military said it carried out drone strike against Al Shabaab, killing at least 52 al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab.

The group has been fighting for more than ten years to topple the weak western backed government of Somalia.
