MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali armed group al Shabaab has given a man and a woman 100 lashes each for alleged adultery in an undisclosed square in southern region.

The man and woman – Salim Hassan Aboukar and Khali Mohamed, who once eloped, were hit by a leather whip for having sexual relationship outside marriage.

The militant media sites say the punishment was based on Sharia laws after Khali’s father Mohamed Aboukar filed a complaint to a court runs by al Shabaab.

He says the two had eloped and then slept as a couple without a religious marriage.

al-Shabaab, which has ties to al-Qaeda often carries out punishments in public, as well as public executions.

The group has been fighting for more than ten years to overthrow the weak UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islamic law.
