Somalia: Deadly ambush hits army checkpoint, 1 dead

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A woman has died and two others injured in an al Shabaab attack on army checkpoint in Afgoye town, some 30km south the capital, Mogadishu.

The attack took place on Thursday when al Shabaab militants carried out ambush attack on security checkpoint in the town, a witness said.

He says a woman had died while two others also hurt during the assault.

Somali security forces reportedly repulsed the attack.

The situation returned to normal after the ensuing clash subsided.

The security forces launched an operation over the attack.

There was no immediate comment from the militant group yet.

Al Shabaab, a al Qaeda linked group was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force.

However, the group lost most of their strongholds, it still controls large rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia
