Somalia: At least 3 killed in al Shabaab attack

MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least three people, including – two soldiers were killed in an Al Shabaab attack on army base near Balcad town.

The attack triggered fierce fighting after the militants attacked on Somali military base, leaving 3 dead, a witness said.

He says the militants carried out surprise assault on army base, some 30km northeast of the capital, Mogadishu.

Somali military says its forces repulsed the militants’ raid.

It has declined to comment on the casualty.

But, the group claimed to have inflicted heavy casualties upon the soldiers during the attack through its website.

Al Shabaab was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force.

The group lost most of their strongholds, but it still controls large rural areas in Somalia.

Last week, the group killed ten people in a gun attack on SYL hotel in the capital, Mogadishu.
