MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali armed group al Shabaab has carried out an attack in Kenya’s Garissa town, a week after 12 Kenyan soldiers were killed a cross-border attack.
The attack took place in Yuumbis area in Kenya’s Garissa where two militants were killed during a brief fighting last night, a VOA journalist quoting sources said.
He says the militants also used explosives to destroy a Safaricom communications mast, and made away with several guns from a police station.
The attack comes as Kenyan forces intensified its border along Somalia after 12 Kenyan soldiers were killed last week in a cross-border attack by al Shabaab.
Al Shabaab, an al Qaeda linked group said last week in a statement posted on its affiliated media outlets that the militants seized control of Kontonka village located in the outskirts of Wajir town during the attack.
The statement added that 12 Kenyan Police officers were killed and 3 others were taken as a hostage and confiscated two motorbikes as well as military equipment.
Al-Shabaab vowed to continue attacks in Kenya, in revenge for its military involvement in Somalia, where 22,000 AU soldiers are battling the group for a decade.
