MOGADISHU – Heavily armed al Shabaab militants carried out an attack on two medical centers supported by International aid agencies in Balcad town, some 30km away from the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The militants took everything in the medical buildings after an attack, a witness said, who asked to be anonymous for a reprisal attack on his life.

He says the militants also urged local residents to let their children fight alongside al Shabaab.

al-Shabaab, an al Qaeda linked group continues to hold small rural areas in central and southern Somalia

The group was pushed out of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, in 2011 after a joint offensive carried out by Somalia and African Union troops.

The rebel group wants to overthrow the weak UN-backed government in Somalia and impose its own strict interpretation of Islamic law.
