MOGADISHU – At least five people have been killed and scores sustained injuries in clan fighting broke out in northwest of Mogadishu.

The fighting flared up when armed militias attacked other militias in Wanlaweyn town, about 90 km (55 miles) to the northwest of Mogadishu.

The clash reportedly related a long-standing clan vendetta, according to a local resident via phone from the town.

He says the victims were taken into hospital.

Tension between two sides have been building up since Friday, he said.

Residents in the town fear the current hostilities could escalate into a full-scale war that will have political, economic and security impact in the region.

The escalation could provoke enormous displacement and create space for the Islamist Al-Shabaab insurgency.
