MOGADISHU, Somalia – The US military says it has killed six Islamic State fighters in an airstrike carried out in the north of Somalia.

The strike was executed on Tuesday in Golis Mountains of Puntland in coordination with the government of Somalia, said, U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. William P. West, deputy director of operations, U.S. Africa Command.

Gen. William P. West says it was seventh airstrike targeting Islamic State strongholds.

He says the US will continue to take advantage of opportunities presented by the networks in order to disrupt their operations and degrade their capabilities.

“At this time, it is assessed the airstrike killed six (6) militants”, he said.

He added no civilian was injured or killed as a result of the airstrike.

P. West said U.S. will continue to work with its partners to transfer the responsibility for long-term security in Somalia from AMISOM to the government of Somalia.

He added U.S. forces will use all effective and appropriate methods to assist Somali army forces and African Union troops in a bid to weaken Al Shabaab.
