Somali army arrest suspected al Shabaab spy near Kismayo

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali army forces have arrested a suspected Al-Shabaab surveillance operative in Sanguni area, some 45km north of the coastal town of Kismayo.

The suspected man was identified as Ibrahim Lujenda Mohamed and paraded at Sanguni base in south of Somalia.

Somali military official says the suspected was taken into custody for further interrogation.

Sanguni, an army base where Al Shabaab group carried out a deadly attack on January 19, 2019, which it said killed 41 soldiers and seized massive weapons.

But, the military denied the militants’ claims, saying nine militants were only killed.

Somali armed group al Shabaab still holds large swaths in the south and central Somalia.

Al Shabaab, an al Qaeda linked group, which wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
