MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least three children have been killed as flash floods swept away scores of people in north of Somalia.
A 17-years old girl and two other kids have swept away when sudden torrential rains unleashed a flood surge, which took domestic animals in Qardho town, a witness said.
The death toll could likely rise, he said.
Last month, heavy rain caused flash floods washed away six people from the same family in Waciye, a remote-town in north of Somalia’s Puntland region.
The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says heavy rains could likely flash floods in towns in central Somalia.
In a report released by FAO said Gu 2019 rains continued to spread across Somalia over the last week with many stations recording moderate to heavy rains of more than 50mm of total rainfall.
FOA said River levels along the Shabelle in Somalia had continued to increase, while the levels along Juba River dropped slightly.
However, Somalia’s Juba and Shabelle River levels are expected to increase slightly in the following weeks, according to FAO.
