MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali security forces have recovered cache explosives after a night operation carried out in Marka, a coastal town lies some 90km south west of Mogadishu.
Somali Police said in a statement that the security forces had successfully seized significant cache of landmines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) following an operation.
The police said as many as 12 landmines and other explosives were recovered.
Last month, Somali police soldiers seized a cache of weapons belonging to al Shabaab after a raid on four sites in Elasha, just 15km outside Mogadishu.
The police spokeswoman Sakio Hussein says police forces unearthed cache of weapons including explosive materials, suicide belts, remote detonators, grenades, cartridges, ammunition, wires and other substances.
There was no immediate comment from Al Shabaab
Al Shabaab, an al Qaeda linked group has been fighting for more than ten years in Somalia.
The group was driven out of Mogadishu in 2011, but the it still hold large swaths and also wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
