MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire has Monday presided an urgent meeting which was discussed on security and war on Al Shabaab.
The meeting was also attended by country’s defense minister Hassan Al Mohamed and army chief at PM’s office in Somali capital Mogadishu.
Mr. Khaire urged country’s army chief to prepare his military forces to launch joint offensive against towns held by al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab.
“I have co-chaired an urgent meeting with defense officials in Somalia to discuss on ways to eradicate Al Shabaab”, he said.
The urgent meeting comes weeks after Mogadishu capital has seen deadly terror attacks that left dozens dead, with some of those attacks were claimed by al Shabaab.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked group, has been fighting for more than ten years in Somalia.
The group wants to overthrow the weak UN-backed government in Somalia and impose its own strict interpretation of Islamic law.
It has lost control of many towns and cities to a 22,000-strong African Union force supporting the government.
But the group still has a strong presence in many rural areas.
