MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least six government soldiers have been killed in roadside bomb explosion in south of Somali capital Mogadishu.
The explosion targeted an armored Somali military vehicle in Sabid town, some 40km south of Mogadishu.
Sabid, a small township seized by Somali army forces, after hours of fighting against Al Shabaab in earlier this month.
Somali armed group Al Shabaab claimed to have killed six soldiers on board in the explosion.
“We have been responsible for the bomb attack. We killed six soldiers”, the group said.
There was no immediate comment from Somali military over the claims.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked group, has been fighting for more than ten years in Somalia.
The group wants to overthrow the weak UN-backed government in Somalia and impose its own strict interpretation of Islamic law.
It has lost control of many towns and cities to a 22,000-strong African Union force supporting the government.
But the group still has a strong presence in many rural areas
