MOGADISHU – Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has held phone talks with his Cuban counterpart Miguel Diaz-Canel after two Cuban doctors, who were kidnapped from Kenya, were seen in a forested town of Somalia.
Miguel Diaz-Canel asked Somali President to do whatever Cuban doctors could be rescued.
Diaz-Canel also held phone conversation with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to discus on whereabouts of Cuban doctors.
Dr Assel Herera Correa, a general physician, and Dr Landy Rodriguez, a surgeon, were allegedly kidnapped by Al-Shabaab militants from Mandera, a town close Kenyan border along Somalia.
But, it is unclear where the hostages are exactly held.
Kenyan government deployed multi-agencies in search for the two doctors who had initially expressed their optimism in working at the dangerous North Eastern region.
Kenyan military helicopters drawn from the Air Cavalry Battalion took over the search and rescue the Cubans, but no sign of the hostages was found yet.
Last week, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau said everything will be done to ensure the safe return of the medics.
Kamau accused Al Shabaab of being behind the abduction, saying there is an urgent need to plug Al-Shabaab militants, in a bid to stabilize its neighboring state of Somalia.
Last year, A group of unidentified gunmen abducted an Italian woman, Silvia Costanza Romano working for an aid organisation in south-east Kenya, police said.
Al-Shabab, who are based in neighboring Somalia, attacked a shopping mall in the capital Nairobi in 2013, killing 67 people.
The al Qaeda-linked group are also thought to be responsible for killing a British man and kidnapping his wife from a resort island in 2011.
