Somali police seize a cache of weapons near Mogadishu

MOGADISHU – Somali police soldiers have seized a cache of weapons belonging to al Shabaab after an operation near the capital Mogadishu.

Sakio Hussein, police spokeswoman says police forces had raided on four sites in Elasha Biyaha , just 15km outside Mogadishu.

Hussein confirms finding a cache of weapons including explosive materials, suicide belts, remote detonators, grenades, cartridges, ammunition, wires and other substances.

She says the police forces searched the underground site after a tip off.

The troops rounded up 35 Al Shabaab suspects in Afgoye town, some 30km south of Somali capital Mogadishu.

The suspects were taken into police station in Mogadishu for further interrogations.

The operation was carried out after Mogadishu capital has seen a week terror attacks claimed by al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab.

The group has been fighting for more than ten years in Somalia.

The al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab was driven out of Mogadishu in 2011, but the group wants to topple the  weak-western backed government of Somalia.
