MOGADISHU, Somalia – The U.S military says it has killed at least 12 Al Shabaab militants in drone strikes carried out in Somalia.

The strikes were carried out near Janaalle town, some 94 km from Somali capital Mogadishu, said Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Gregg Olson, U.S. Africa Command director of operations

Olson says the strikes killed 12 fighters while continue Somalia’s consistent efforts to degrade al-Shabaab.

He says the airstrikes on February 11 were executed as Somali forces were leading an operation in an area where al-Shabaab conducts terrorist activities, as well as exploits the local populace for illegal taxes.

“Our security partners are actively executing operations in Somalia to increase the span of governance of Somalia,” he said.

Olson says US forces will continue to work with our partners to transfer the responsibility for long-term security from AMISOM to Somalia and its Member States.

However,  U.S. military says its forces will use all effective and appropriate methods to protect the Somali people from terrorists.
