US military says 118 Al Shabaab in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia –Top U.S. military chief in Africa Marine Gen. Thomas Waldhause says 118 Al Shabaab fighters were killed in 12 air strikes carried out in Somalia, since the start of 2019.

Gen. Thomas Waldhause told U.S. Congress on Thursday that its airstrike campaign won’t be enough to defeat Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab in Somalia, where indigenous forces need to “step up” the fight.

2017 – 35 strikes against Al Shabaab in Somalia

2018 – 47 strikes against Al Shabaab in Somalia, killing 323 militants

2019 – 12 strikes against Al Shabaab so far that killed 118 militants.

Gen. Thomas Waldhause says “we’re trying to support Somali government’s plan to eliminate the Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab in Somalia.

The United States has some 500 special operation forces in the country supporting the Somali military and the U.N.-backed African Union Mission in Somalia, known as AMISOM.
