US military launches air, ground offensive against Al Shabaab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The U.S. military has carried air, ground offensive against Al Shabaab base in Barire town, some some 50 km away from Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Somali especial forces, along with U.S. troops came under an ambush attack by Al Shabaab, according to a military official, who asked to be anonymous.

He says the coalition forces raided on militants’ base in the town, leaving at least 10 militants dead.

A cache of weapons was also destroyed in the operation.

There was no immediate comment from Al Shabaab over the claims.

The U.S. military carried out two air strikes against Al Shabaab for last couple days, but it is unclear how many were killed or injured.

The military said it intensified airstrikes in Somalia in efforts to weaken the al-Shabab’s grip on the Horn of Africa nation.
