MOGADISHU – Somali Islamist group Al Shabaab has on Friday claimed to have shot and killed district police boss in the capital of Mogadishu.

Lieutenant colonel Moalim Dahir Hussein was gunned down by men armed with pistols while he was on his way to police station in the capital, a witness said.

The killers escaped from the crime scene.

Somali security forces arrived at the area and launched an operation over the killing.

Hussein’s killing is latest in a string of shootings in the seaside city of Mogadishu, amidst tight security and heavy presence of government forces on the main streets and junctions.

The al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab claimed the responsibility for Friday’s assassination.

Mogadishu has witnessed increasing assassinations and bomb attacks in the past few months, mostly claimed by Al Shabaab, which is fighting to oust the UN-backed weak government of Somalia.
