MOGADISHU, Somalia – At least six government soldiers have been killed in bomb and ambush attack claimed by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab in south of Somalia.

The attack took place at Jazeera area near Mogadishu, after roadside bomb explosion followed by an ambush assault targeted an armored vehicle carrying Somali army forces.

In online statement aired by Radio Andulus, an Al Shabaab mouthpiece said, the group’s fighters killed at least six soldiers during the attack.

The soldiers were reportedly heading to Somali capital Mogadishu on Thursday.

Somali military officials were unavailable to reach on the phone for comments on Thursday’s attack.

Al Shabaab group has been driven out of many urban areas since 2011 following joint military offensives carried out by African Union forces and Somali National Army forces.

The group still controls territory in rural areas and carries out gun attacks and bombings on military and civilian targets in the war-ravaged nation.
