MOGADISHU – Somali online journalist Nur Ismail Sheikh has been detained by security forces in Mogadishu.

Sheikh has been in detention for more than a week without any crime, according to Union Journalists.

The National Union of Somali Journalists says government forces had detained Journalist Sheikh.

NUSOJ says he has not been charged with any crime.

The government has not publicly addressed the reason behind his detention.

Somali MP Ahmed Mo’alim Fiqi has strongly condemned Sheikh’s detention.

Hon. Fiqi called for unconditional and immediate release of Sheikh from the prison in Mogadishu.

“It is unfortunate to hear the detention of journalist Sheikh, who works for his society”, he said.

Somalia is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists: 45 Somali reporters were killed between 2007 and 2015, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
