MOGADISHU— Somali especial forces known as ‘DANAB’, along with African Union peacekeepers backed by US troops carried out joint military offensive against Al Shabaab.
The military offensive was conducted on Saturday after the coalition forces targeted a camp runs by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab, causing untold number of casualties.
In Twitter feed, African Union peacekeeping force said its forces with Somali especial forces and partners had conducted a successful joint operation to disrupt terrorist activities in Lower Juba.
The peacekeeping mission lauded the troops who were part of the exercise and reiterated its commitment to restore lasting peace in Somalia.
It remains unclear how many militants or soldiers were killed in the latest military operation.
“Joint African Union, Danab Forces and partners today conducted a successful joint operation to disrupt terrorist activities in Lower Juba”, the mission said.
Somali military officials were unavailable to reach on the phone for comments on the operation.
There was no immediate comments from the militant group over the claims.
The group has been waging insurgency for more than ten years in Somalia.
Al-Shabaab, which once controlled much of Somali capital Mogadishu in 2011, wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
