MOGADISHU – The President of Federal Republic of Somalia has invited all regional State leaders to attend an urgent meeting of National Security Council in Somali capital Mogadishu.
President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed (Farmajo) proposed the meeting to take place 17th-18th September after the five regional chiefs took an unprecedented step to suspend working relationship with the central government.
Mohamed says the meeting will be discussed political, security issues and fighting against Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab and Islamic State groups in Somalia.
The call made by country’s President Mohamed comes after leaders of five Somali regional states on Saturday resolved to suspend relations with the central government, citing a lack of political and security progress.
The leaders from Jubaland, Puntland, Southwest, Galmudug and Hirshabelle regions also accused the central government of interfering with regional issues, failure to implement security architecture and not fulfilling political agreements, said in a memo.
The central government was also blamed for failing in the fight against al-Shabab, the memo said.
The leaders’ statement said there was no proper coordination between the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops and Somali national security forces.
The unprecedented step took by the regional leaders is said to be the latest political setback by the central government which is trying to partner with the international community to stabilize the Horn of Africa nation.
