Four killed as Somali forces clash with Al-Shabaab

MOGADISHU – Somali military says its forces fought against Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab fighters in Marka town, some 91km southwest of Mogadishu.

The fighting erupted after Al Shabaab militants launched an ambush attack on army bases manned by government soldiers in the town.

A Somali military officer, Hassan Mohamud Hussein says its forces repulsed the attack launched by Al Shabaab.

He confirmed four militants had been killed during the fighting.

Marka, a coastal town locates some 91km southwest of Somali capital Mogadishu is under control of country’s army forces, following joint military operation earlier this week.

Somali military also claimed to have killed number of Al Shabaab fighters in fighting in wednesday in the town.

The militant group has lost the coastal town of Marka to Somali army forces following joint military offensive earlier this week.

Al-Shabab has been waging an insurgency in Somalia for more than 10 years.

A 22,000-strong African Union force is in the country to help the government fight the al-Qaeda-linked militants.
