MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Somalia and Eritrea have agreed to resume diplomatic ties and open embassies in the capitals of Asmara and Mogadishu.
In an interview, Somalia’s Information Minister Dahir Mohammed Gelle says the announcement followed a historic visit by country’s president Mohammed Abdullahi Farmaajo to Eritrea’s capital Asmara.
He said Farmajo’s visit to Eritrea will have significant contribution in heralding a new era of relation between Eritrea and Somalia.
“This first visit made by our president Mohamed Farmajo will have important contribution in the development of the mutual relations and cooperation between the two countries and peace and stability in the region”, he said.
Gelle added that peace and stability is priority demand of the peoples in the region, saying that the stronger relations prevailing in the region will be important step in the development of peace and stability.
The Eritrea’s President Isaias Afwerki hosted lunch in honor of President Mohammed Abdullahi and his delegation, after visiting in Asmara on Saturday.
“During his stay in Asmara, President Mohammed Abdullahi will conduct discussion with President Isaias Afwerki on the development of bilateral relations and regional issues of interest to both countries”, according to Eritrea’s Minister of Information.
He says it is to be recalled that Eritrea and Somalia have had warm and friendly relations from the beginning of the Eritrean people’s armed struggle for independence.
The President of the Republic of Somalia paid a three day official visit to Eritrea at an invitation of President Isaias Afwerki to arrive in Asmara.
