Three soldiers killed in ambush near Baidoa

BAIDOA, Somalia – Heavily armed militants belonging to Al Shabaab have launched deadly ambush attack on Somali military convoy near Baidoa town, some 250km southwest of Mogadishu.

Sunday’s surprise assault happened when militants armed with RPGs, machine-guns and Ak-47s attacked an armored vehicle carrying soldiers near the town, leaving 3 soldiers on board dead.

Two other soldiers were also injured in the attack, according to a witness, who asked to be unnamed for reprisal attack on his life.

The ambush attack was immediately claimed by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab group.

The group says its fighters had attacked on military vehicle carrying military soldiers heading to Qansahdhere town.

The Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab has also claimed responsibility for a bomb attack on police station in Mogadishu on Saturday through its website, saying it left police officer dead.

The group was designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the US in 2008.

It carried out similar suicide attacks in Somalia and neighboring country which left hundreds of people dead.
