UAE condemns Somalia for seizing aircraft with $9.6m

The United Arab Emirates has condemned the seizure of a private civil aircraft registered in the UAE on Sunday, shortly after landing at airport in Mogadishu.

The plane was carrying 47 people from the UAE forces, and taking the $9.6m allocated to support the Somali army and trainees under threat, according to the WAM agency,

Emirati official, who asked to be anonymous says the funds were intended to support and pay the Somali army on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two countries.

The foreign ministry said in a statement that the move was illegal as it contradicted the established diplomatic norms and traditions between countries and was a serious breach of the provisions of the memorandum of understanding, and thus contravened the rules of international law and international norms.
