Ijara MP Sophia Noor has called on security apparatus to increase surveillance after suspected Al Shabaab raided Ijara police station, burnt it down and made away with a police vehicle.

Speaking to journalists in Ijara Town on Saturday, the MP said that locals are in fear after the Saturday dawn daring attack.

She said that security has to be tightened as locals prepare to usher in the new year (2018).

“We are appealing to the security agencies to increase security surveillance in Ijara and the larger Garissa county and assure locals of their safety ahead of the new year,” she said.

The lawmaker said that police have a responsibility to guarantee security, noting that instances of terror-related attacks continue to affect the Garissa county and the larger North Eastern region.

She urged locals to be vigilant and report to the police suspicious people and elements.

The ijara police station was attacked by close to 70 armed suspected Al Shabaab on Saturday morning.

The attackers made away with a police vehicle which was later recovered in Boni forest.

The attackers also destroyed a Safaricom communication mast and raided several shops where they made away with foodstuffs, money and other belongings.

According to the North Eastern Regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh, security has been beefed up across the region.

Saleh in a briefing with journalists at the Garissa county commissioner’s office on Saturday said that police surveillance will be heightened ahead of the new year celebrations.
