BOSASO — Somali-based group of Al Shabaab has claimed to have carried out an attack on army checkpoint in Bosaso town, killing several soldiers.

The group’s military operation spokesman, Sheikh Abdulaziz Abu Musab said that its fighters killed seven Puntland soldiers after an overnight daring attack on a security checkpoint at the main entrance of the coastal city of Bosaso.

At least 11 other soldiers were also injured in the attack, according to Abu Musab.

“We carried out the attack. our fighters killed seven Puntland soldiers and injured 11 others. We also took control of the checkpoint and left earlier on Monday morning”, he said.

Puntland is also home to a splinter group of al-Shabaab that has sworn allegiance to Islamic State. Security sources say a small contingent of foreign fighters is based.
