MOGADISHU – Somali National Army (SNA), along with African Union peacekeeping troops are preparing to launch military offensive against targets held by Al Shabaab fighters.

The military spokesman, Mohamed Isse says that the coalition forces would target bases held by Al Shabaab in parts of lower Shabelle region.

“We are now arranging military operation against Al Shabaab. The militants are hiding out of parts in the region”, Isse said.

He says all armed militants will be eradicated as soon as possible after the operation started in the following weeks.

The homegrown extremist group of Al Shabaab has lost some of its territory under pressure from the African Union force, which numbers more than 20,000, and from Somalia’s security forces.

But al-Shabab continues to carry out deadly attacks in the capital and elsewhere.
