MOGADISHU – Two civilian people have been killed earlier on Wednesday in drive-by shooting in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu.

The victims – a female activist, whose name has not been released and her driver were shot dead by gunmen, who pulled up near her car in another vehicle in the city’s Via-Roma area.

“I saw gunmen driving in a car following the victims, then they opened fire … she and her driver died at scene”, a witness, who asked to be anonymous said.

The killers have immediately escaped from the crime scene.

Tens of security and police soldiers arrived at the area, and launched an investigation to the shooting in the capital.

No arrests were made over Wednesday’s attack.

The reason behind for the killing remains unknown.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the drive-by shooting in the capital of Mogadishu.

Such assassination attacks are often carried out by Somali-based group of Al Shabaab, which is battling Western-backed government based in Mogadishu.

The Shabab fighters fled fixed positions in Mogadishu 2011 and have since lost most large towns to a 22,000-strong UN-backed African Union force, fighting alongside government soldiers.

But the group’s fighters still hold sway in areas of the rural hinterland, from which they regularly launch attacks.
