MOGADISHU, Somalia— At least three people have been shot and killed by unknown armed gunmen near Somali capital Mogadishu.

The victims were reported to have been civilians when gunmen opened fire on a vehicle in which they were travelling in Elash Biyah area, just 15km west of Mogadishu.

A witness says the attackers had fled from the crime scene uncaught.

It remains unclear why the civilians were killed.

But, Somali police arrived at the crime scene to investigate the incident.

The soldiers started an operation to hunt down the culprits, according to an eyewitness, who asked to be anonymous.

The dreadful shooting comes a week after six people were shot dead on board by gunmen in Elasha area near the capital of Mogadishu.

Last week, Somali security forces discovered mass cache of weapons belonging to Al Shabaab in Elasha area, after a tip off.

The operation also saw the arrest of 15 people accused of being members of al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab fighting the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
