MOGADISHU— Somali armed group Al Shabaab claimed to have carried out a deadly attack on Kenyan military forces near Kenyan border town along Somalia.

The attack took place in Dhamase after heavily armed Al Shabaab fighters launched an ambush attack on Kenyan armed personnel carriers, causing casualties.

The group says its fighters had inflicted heavy casualties on Kenyan forces after the attack..

There was no immediate comment from Kenyan military over the claims.

The attack comes a day after the group claimed to have killed a Kenyan police soldier in an attack on police station in Mandera town.

Al-Shabab is an armed group based in Somalia, fighting to topple the Western-backed Somali government.

The group also wants to impose a strict version of Islamic law in Somalia.

The al Qaeda linked group has carried out several attacks in neighboring countries, including Kenya, since Nairobi launched a military operation inside Somalia in 2011
