US says airstrike kills 2 Al-Shabaab fighters

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The US military says it has carried out an airstrike in south of Somalia, killing 2 Al Shabaab fighters.

The strike was conducted on Tuesday about 46 kilometers (28 miles) northeast of the coastal town of Kismayo.

A statement issued by the US Africa command said it had killed 2 Al- Shabaab fighters in the drone strike.

US military says it assesses that no civilians were killed in the airstrike against Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab group in Somalia.

The Trump administration approved expanded military operations against extremists in Somalia, including al-Shabaab, which is linked to al-Qaeda

The U.S. has carried out 20 such strikes this year against the Somalia-based al-Shabab. The al-Qaida-linked group is the deadliest Islamic extremist organization in sub-Saharan Africa and it often targets Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.
