JALALAQSI (AGGM) — Heavily armed Al Shabaab fighters launched an attack on army base manned by Somali forces backed by African Union troops from Djibouti in Jalalaqsi town.

The clash erupted after Al Shabab fighters armed with machine-guns, RPGs and AK-47s attacked on army bases in the town, leaving a soldier dead.

Deputy Commissioner for social department in the town, Mohamed Ali Gabow said that at least one soldier had been killed in the attack, adding that the coalition forces repulsed Thursday’s assault.

Neither Somalia and African Union officials nor Al Shabaab commented on the attack.

But, such attacks are often carried out by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab fighters based in Somalia.

The group lose several key towns to Somali army forces and African Union peacekeepers, but still controls large swaths in rural areas in the war-ravaged country.
