BAIDOA, Somalia – At least seven people have been killed when heavily armed al Shabaab launched an ambush attack on a military armored vehicle in the southwest of Somalia.
The attack triggered fierce fighting on Saturday after al Shabaab ambushed military forces near Bur Eyle some 50km north of Burhakaba town.
Somali military official, who asked to be anonymous, said five al Shabaab militants were killed in the fighting.
He also said two soldiers lost their lives in the fighting against al Qaeda linked al Shabaab.
There was no immediate comment from al Shabaab over the claims.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked group, has been fighting for more than ten years to overthrow the weak UN-backed government in Somalia
