An Italian military convoy was targeted by a massive car bomb in Somalia.
The attack was captured on a dash cam as the convoy drove through the capital city of Mogadishu, Somalia.
In the footage a large truck can be seen travelling up ahead along what appears to be an isolated road.
Another vehicle, a silver mini-van, pulls out of a junction on the right-hand side of the screen before joining the track which is flanked by pylons.
Suddenly there is a loud bang and the military vehicle becomes engulfed by a blaze of fire which appears to have originated from the joining vehicle.
Soldiers in the truck can be heard shouting as plumes of smoke surround the vehicle.
The truck’s bonnet falls to the ground outside and the windscreen becomes covered in debris, which is where the video ends.
Several Somali civilians suffered minor wounds but no one was seriously injured during the attack.
Photos posted later of the four-wheeled tactical truck, an IVECO Light Multirole Vehicle, showed it had come out relatively unscathed.
A Somali security officer claimed that EU advisers who had been training the national army were in the envoy.
The attack took place on September 30 was one of two in Somalia claimed by insurgent group al-Shabaab.
The second targeted the US special forces base in the town of Baledogle which is often used to train the Somali army’s counterterrorism units.
It was hit by a bomb attacked before a a flurry of small weapon fire.
It is believed that the increased action has been prompted by increased airstrikes in the country after Donald Trump declared the south an ‘area of active hostilities’ soon after taking office.
The jihadists were driven out of Mogadishu in 2011 by government forces backed by 20,000 African Union peacekeepers but they still carry out attacks including suicide bombings against government targets.
