UN chief for Somalia arrives in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia –The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia James Swan has arrived on Tuesday in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Amb. James Swan was warmly welcomed at the airport on his arrival.

Mr. Swan, a US diplomat will replace an emissary, Nicholas Haysom, who was expelled four months ago by Somalia after he raised human rights concerns.

Swan served as Washington’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He was also a US deputy assistant secretary of state for Africa and ambassador to Djibouti.

The United Nations is seeking to shore up stability in Somalia, where al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab fighters have been fighting for a decade to topple the government.
