MOGADISHU – Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire has held talks with Simon Mulongo, Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission for Somalia.
The meeting was also attended by AMISOM Force Commander Gen. Tigabu Yilma Wondimhunegn and mission’s Advisor on Transition Lt. Gen. Osman Soubagele on Saturday in Mogadishu.
Mr. Mulongo says the meeting was discussed on the security of Somalia and progress on the transition from African Union mission [AMISOM].
Mulongo said he and other AMISOM leaders and PM Khaire had talked about the Transition Plan as Somalia prepares to take the security responsibility from African Union mission, ahead of AMISOM’s anticipated exit in 2021.
The Transition Plan is said to be a comprehensive guide developed by the government of Somalia and its partners to the transfer of security responsibility to its forces from AMISOM.
The African Union Peace and Security Council (AU PSC) endorsed on 30 April 2018, the Somalia Transition Plan (STP).
The African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) also continued to register progress in implementing its mandate, guided by the transition plan.
Somali National Army (SNA) forces proved their increasing capabilities as the military forces backed by AMISOM troops seized al Shabaab controlled towns of Sabiid and Bariire in Lower Shabelle region.
Somalia and UN-backed African Union peacekeeping forces have been battling against al Shabaab for more than ten years in Somalia.
The al Qaeda linked al Shabaab wants to topple the weak-western backed government based in Mogadishu.
