Somalia’s Puntland elects new president after election in Garowe

MOGADISHU – Somalia’s semi-autonomous state parliament of Puntland has elected a new president on Tuesday in a hotly contested presidential election in Garowe town.

Sa’id Andullahi Deni has wins Puntland leadership race with 35 votes race after the conclusion of a third-round contest, according to electoral commission.

The electoral commission said Deni defeated his close rival, Asad Osman Diyano.

The elected President vows he will move the state forward from where his predecessor Abdiweli Gaas left while briefly addressing to the lawmakers of Puntland.

Who is Sa’id Abdullahi Deni?

Deni was born in Somali capital Mogadishu 1966 – graduated from Somali National University in 1990 – Putra University Malaysia in 2000.

He became a Somalia Federal MP in 2012.

He also served as Somalia Minister of Planning in 2014
