MOGADISHU, Somalia – Death toll from twine suicide explosions in Somali capital Mogadishu has risen to 15 people, mostly civilians on board, police and medics said.
The first explosion targeted a security checkpoint near National Theatre in the capital, leaving 10 people dead, policeman Guleid Hussein said.
Hussein says 2nd explosion went off shortly after first responders came together to rescue the blast victims, killing 5 other people on spot.
Amin ambulance service said its rescue workers had evacuated 12 people, who were killed in the double suicide bomb explosion on Saturday near heavily fortified area in the capital of Mogadishu.
Top Somali journalist Awil Dahir Salad and two other of his friends working Universal TV based in London, were among those who were killed in Saturday’s suicide attack claimed by Al Shabaab.
Saturday’s attack was claimed by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab.
The group says it has targeted security forces in the capital.
The Al Qaeda inspired group has been waging insurgency for more than ten years in Somalia.
However, Al Shabaab, which once controlled much of the capital of Mogadishu, wants to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia.
