MOGADISHU – Somali Islamist group of Al Shabaab claimed to have attacked a police post in Garissa, northeast of Kenya, leaving 3 soldiers dead.
The group says its fighters raided on Hamey Police station near the Kenya-Somalia border, triggering a clash lasted for hours.
“The Mujahidin fighters carried out an attack on the police station from different corners and had a heavy exchange of fire with officers based at the post”, the group said.
The Islamist group claimed to have killed at least 3 Kenyan police officers in the attack.
The county police boss, David Kerina says none of its soldiers had been killed in the attack claimed by Al Shabaab.
Kerina added that four officers had been sustained minor injuries during the assault.
“It is an ambush attack, but our soldiers repulsed the raid on the station and warded of the militants”, he said.
David Kerina says one police officer had gone missing after the surprise attack.
The Kenyan police soldiers launched operations to hunt down the attackers, who are believed to be returned to Somalia.
The Somali-based militants have in the recent past staged attacks targeting security officials in areas around the Kenya-Somalia border.
