MOGADISHU, Somalia – A deadly car bomb explosion has killed two people – a police officer and a civilian in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The bomb blast took place near country’s presidential palace in the capital after an IED fitted into police officer Jabari’s vehicle exploded.

Somali government spokesperson Ismael Mukhtar Omar says the officer was driving near the heavily-fortified zone when the explosion occurred.

“A police officer and a civilian were killed in an explosion from IED believed to have been planted in Jabari’s vehicle”, he said.

Somali armed group al Shabaab has claimed the responsibility for Thursday’s bomb attack in Mogadishu.

Mogadishu has seen deadly similar attacks, with most them were claimed by the al Qaeda linked group in Somalia.

The group was driven out of the capital, Mogadishu in 2011 by Somali army and African Union troops.

The rebel group still holds large swaths in south and central regions of Somalia.
