The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said it has completed a week-long training to enhance the skills of the Somali Police in crime prevention through community policing.

Mohamoud Yusif, acting AMISOM police training coordinator, said topics covered during the training included community policing strategies, conflict resolution, legal frameworks of policing in Somalia, professional standards and code of ethics

Other topics discussed include de-radicalization and countering violent extremism, community engagement, protection of vulnerable groups, and gender issues in community policing.

The AU mission says it will support the transition, through the priority tasks including securing main supply routes, securing key population centers, to mentor and assist Somali security forces, both military and police, in close collaboration with the UN.

Under the Somalia Transition Plan, AMISOM police ensure that the Somali Police Force is adequately equipped in preparation to assume full responsibility of maintaining law and order in the country when AMISOM leaves in 2021. Enditem
