Somali president apologises for atrocities committed in Somaliland under Barre’s regime

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The President of Federal government of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed has apologised for atrocities committed in Somaliland under previous government of Mohamed Siyad Barre.

Speaking at a judicial conference in Mogadishu, Mohamed said the nation needed to acknowledge, correct a dark chapter and apologise to ‘our brothers who were killed, maimed in the north’.

Mohamed’s apology comes a day after he held talks with the current leadership of the breakaway of Somaliland in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.
