MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali army forces have taken control of key areas near Jamame town from the al Qaeda linked al Shabaab group on Sunday in an operation.
The operation was executed by the special forces known as ‘Danab’ near Jamame town to recapture key areas held by Al Shabaab, said a military officer, who asked to be anonymous.
He says the military forces came under ambush attack by the militants in Sanguni area during the operation.
He added heavy casualty inflicted upon the militants.
He says the special forces also recaptured key area near the town.
There was no immediate comment from the group over the claims.
The group still poses threats to the weak-Western-backed government of Somalia.
The al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab also carried out deadly truck bombings for the past weeks in the capital, Mogadishu, leaving over hundred people, including Turkish nationals.
The group was pushed out of Mogadishu capital in 2011 by Somali army troops and 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia.
The rebel group also lost most of their strongholds, but it still controls large rural areas and remains the key threat to peace in Somalia.
