MOGADISHU –Somali armed group Al Shabaab has carried out an attack on African Union troops’ base near Bulamerer town, about 110 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu.

The attack triggered heavy clash between Ugandan troops under African Union mission and Al Shabaab after an attack on AMISOM base in Golweyn area near the town.

Hussein Mohamed Nour, a witness says heavy weaponry could be heard after the attack.

He says the African Union troops repulsed the ambush attack.

It is unclear how many were killed or injured.

The African Union mission remained unavailable to comment on the orchestrated attack carried out by an al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab.

Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked group, has been fighting for more than ten years in Somalia.

The group wants to overthrow the weak UN-backed government in Somalia and impose its own strict interpretation of Islamic law.

It has lost control of many towns and cities to a 22,000-strong African Union force supporting the government.

But the group still has a strong presence in many rural areas.
