Somalia: Huge fire engulfs largest market in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A huge blaze began in the main market of Somali capital Mogadishu, sending thick plumes of smoke billowing over the capital.

The fire destroyed stores, goods as the blaze engulfed large parts of the main Bakara market in the capital of Mogadishu, a witness Hussein Geidi Mohamed said.

Mohamed says residential houses close to the marker were also affected by the inferno which persisted for hours before it was extinguished.

The cause of the fire remains unclear but market traders blamed an electrical fault.

In an interview with store owners said a huge loss of properties due to the fire, which sent plumes of smoke into the air.

Somali local government officials visited the burned-out marketplace and said that firefighters were hampered by the market’s narrow streets.

“We have started an investigation over the cause of the fire”, the local officials said.

Somalia’s capital has a small fire brigade which must respond to numerous fires in the city, which is recovering from decades of war.
