MOGADISHU — Somali police says its forces killed two Al Shabaab fighters in fighting in Marka town, some 91km south west of the capital of Mogadishu.

The battle flared up when the police soldiers came under ambush attack by Al Shabaab while the soldiers were conducting operations in neighborhoods of the town, a witness, Hashi Hussein said.

He says two militants loft their lives in the gunfight in the coastal town of Marka.

Col. Ali Roble, police boss in the town, says the operation was carried out after heavily armed Al Shabaab launched an attack on the police station last night.

Roble confirmed the deaths of two Al Shabaab fighters.

He declined to comment on if any soldier was killed or injured in the skirmish.

But, the armed group Al Shabaab has claimed to have inflicted heavy losses upon the soldiers.

The al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab has been fighting to topple the weak-western backed government of Somalia for more than ten years.
