MOGADISHU – Somali army forces have removed illegal roadblocks placed by gunmen wearing country’s military uniforms to extort public vehicles en-route to Afgoye town, some 30km south of Mogadishu.

Somali army chief, Odowa Jouseph says its army forces had destroyed several illegal checkpoints after an operation.

Jouseph says the military forces had arrested 5 gunmen, wearing military uniforms, whom he says were extorting the public vehicles and locals on board while traveling through Afgoye to the capital of Mogadishu.

He says the army forces would continue such operations until the gunmen are eradicated.

The detainees were taken into police stations in the capital for further interrogations.

Last year, Somali forces pulled down 10 road blocks in an operation aimed at easing transport and curtailing criminal networks which collect money from vehicles plying various routes around the capital of Mogadishu.
